COVID-19 STAFF BULLETIN - March 31, 2020

“We will not forget those who keep our hospitals running.  Those who keep our hospitals clean. Those who do the laundry and work in security. Their commitment is extraordinary. Their contribution will not be forgotten.” - Health Minister Adrian Dix - Daily Briefing

Situation Update
  • BC ventilator update: 83 added to supply (30 new; 53 refurbished) in addition to existing supply of 1,272.
  • Interior health has reported its first large community outbreak among temporary foreign workers living together in safe conditions at a nursery in West Kelowna.  Everyone is being monitored.
  • The federal government is allocating $2 billion to buy PPE. It has also signed deals with three Canadian companies to make masks, ventilators, swabs and testing kits to create a sustainable, stable supply over the coming weeks.  To read the full statement, click here.

PERSONAL PROTECT EQUIPMENT (PPE) RECOMMENDATIONS DEVELOPED FOR ACUTE AND COMMUNITY SETTINGS

Last week, the Ministry of Health announced the requirement that all staff, medical staff and contracted staff who have direct contact with patients, clients and residents wear surgical/procedural masks, eye protection and gloves when providing direct care to patients, clients and residents across Vancouver Coastal Health and Providence Health Care.

WANT TO RECEIVE URGENT PROVIDENCE ALERTS? DON’T MISS ANY COVID-19 UPDATES

We have a new internal text messaging system for urgent alerts concerning COVID-19.

REMINDER: STAFF SUPPORT - SUPPORT LINE AND STAFF MENTAL HEALTH & WELLNESS RESOURCES

To alleviate some of the immense stress on our staff and medical staff who are engaged in PHC’s COVID-19 response, Providence has several support resources in place for staff to sustain us going forward.

PEOPLE & REQUESTS FOR HELP NEEDED FOR THE PEOPLE REDEPLOYMENT CENTRE

We are encouraging non-clinical and non-contract staff to join our growing band of brilliant redeployment people, helping and supporting everyone across our hospitals and long term care facilities so that people can get through tough times together.

RESEARCH DAY AND RESEARCH & MISSION AWARD

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Providence Health Care Research Institute has made the decision to cancel 2020 Research Day and postpone the announcement of the 2020 Research & Mission Award. Although registration for Research Day had not yet opened, it was scheduled for June 5.

WHERE TO SEND ALL OF THOSE OFFERS OF HELP

We now have a single point of contact to direct all offers of help to, for offers of goods and services - “value-in-kind” resources - with respect to the COVID19 response. This can include offers to donate food or meals, offers of donated PPE, information received from hotels about available  accommodations and facilities, and other goods and services.

COVID-19 WEBSITE EXPANDED: CHECK IT OUT!

As COVID-19 resources and information for the public continues to grow, VCH has also grown their website to make it easier for the public to navigate. Check out the refresh at: www.vch.ca/covid19.

INVOICE SUBMISSIONS TO ACCOUNTS PAYABLE

As an interim measure to support users/departments impacted by the COVID-19 situation with staff working remotely, Accounts Payable will accept coded and approved invoices submitted via email by the appropriate Financial Signing Officer authorized to approve the invoice.

SO MANY NOT-SO-RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

We have been (almost!) overwhelmed by the incredible support and generosity of our community. Today, we're sending gratitude and thanks to LifeSciences BC. By enlisting the help of their many industry members and contacts, they were able to deliver 73,000 gloves to Crosstown Clinic. For patients and health care workers in the Downtown Eastside, this is a gift of safety and compassion. Thank you!

STAFF RELYING ON TRANSIT

We are exploring how we can support Providence staff who commute to work. One option is partnering with EVO car share that would provide staff access to a limited supply of sponsored EVO cars.
