Please be advised that the COVID-19 outbreak on the third floor at Brock Fahrni has been declared over by Public Health.

The outbreak had resulted in a total of nine residents testing positive for COVID. We are deeply saddened by the two resident deaths that resulted from the outbreak.

Visitation to all of Brock Fahrni – including the 3rd Floor and Peach Tree neighbourhood – can resume, Tuesday, September 14th. We are looking forward to the return of family and friends. Please be advised of the following visitor guidelines:

  • Visits do not need to be booked in advance. We welcome visitors between the hours of  10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • All visitors must wear a mask in common spaces, including multi-bed rooms.
  • Visitors who have provided proof of full vaccination can remove their mask in private rooms, designated visiting areas, and outdoors.
  • Virtual visits will continue to be offered and can be booked through the nursing station.

All group activities for seniors on the 3rd Floor can also resume as per normal. We will continue to follow provincial Public Health COVID-19 guidelines and policies in all our activities and operation, and maintain vigilance in protecting residents and staff.

Thank you for your cooperation during the outbreak. COVID outbreaks can be emotionally challenging for all involved and your patience and understanding were of great assistance in managing the outbreak.

September 8, 2021 Update

Wednesday, September 8, 2021

Dear Staff and Medical Staff of Brock Fahrni,

We are writing to provide you with an update on our COVID-19 outbreak for the third floor at Brock Fahrni.

To date, there have been nine residents who tested positive for COVID. Sadly, we have had another resident die – bringing our total of residents who have died to two.

Guided by Public Health, we are continuing to dedicate resources to manage the situation. Our pandemic response team, medical microbiologist and infection prevention and control team, and numerous operational and facilities representatives are ensuring our residents continue to receive exceptional and compassionate care in a safe and supportive manner.

Please be advised of the following:

  • Breaks:
    • REMINDER: We have put up a tent on the third floor outdoor area for staff breaks – we encourage you to take your break outside.
    • Break rooms have been created on the BF3 Peach wing – break room is the only area to have food and drinks. Please do not remove your mask to eat or drink anywhere else on the unit.
  • Care staff have been separated between the third and fourth floors. Additionally, third-floor staff have been further cohorted between the affected neighbourhood (i.e. Peach Tree) and the rest of the floor, to ensure further mitigation of infection risk.
  • We will continue to monitor and screen residents, performing symptom checks twice daily. Our team remains vigilant to test any resident who demonstrates signs of symptoms or COVID-19, however mild.
  • Enhanced cleaning and disinfection of all high-touch surfaces are continuing.
  • Self-monitoring or self-isolation of staff/medical staff as required is being practiced.
  • All group activities on the third floor have been suspended.
  • Suspension of social visitors to all of Brock Fahrni remains in effect.

Have questions or concerns:

  • You are all working under tremendous pressure and stress. Please know there’s extra help should you need it. Please talk to your supervisor/manager or seek further assistance by contacting Occupational Health & Safety at 604-806-9925 or Homewood Health (new EFAP) at 1-800-663-1142 if you wish to talk to speak to someone about the psychological impact on yourself and/or your family.
  • We also encourage you to reach out to the Spiritual Health team at Brock Fahrni (604-806-9708) for emotional or psycho-spiritual support during this time.

Should there be any new developments or changes to the above, you will be provided regular updates, as needed.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do reach out to me.

Thank you.

The deep level of commitment you all have demonstrated sets a high bar and resonates with residents, families, colleagues and our partners in the health care system.

August 24, 2021 Update

Dear Residents, Families, Staff, and Medical Staff,

I’m writing to let you know that three residents have been diagnosed with COVID-19 on the 3rd floor at Brock Fahrni Long-term Care. As of today, the third floor of Brock Fahrni will be declared outbreak status.

We are working with Public Health to closely monitor and manage this situation and we are testing all residents. At this time, no additional staff or residents have tested positive for COVID-19.

Out of an abundance of caution and detailed consultation with our Pandemic Response Team, Medical Microbiologist, and Infection Prevention and Control Team, we have increased our precautions. Please refer to the list below; further measures for infection control may be directed by Public Health, as required.

Please be advised that:

No social visitors will be allowed at this time for the third floor residents. Fourth floor residents can continue to receive visitors.
Additional precautions are in place on the third floor and all group activities have been suspended.
We will continue to monitor residents and perform symptom checks twice daily. Our team remains vigilant to test any resident who demonstrates signs of symptoms or COVID-19, however mild.
Additional rapid testing is underway for staff.
All Brock Fahrni Long-term Care staff will continue to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as before, in order to protect residents and staff at all times. Staff will continue to self-monitor and go for testing should they develop any signs or symptoms, however mild.
Brock Fahrni Long-term Care staff will not be able to work across other care homes until otherwise directed.
Staff are encouraged to take their breaks outside and not use the break room. If you are using the break room, please keep numbers to a minimum, practice physical distancing and only remove your mask when you are eating.

For families with outstanding questions, requiring emotional support or needing assistance navigating the health care system, please contact the PHC/VCH LTC Family Support Line at 1-844-824-2219 or 604-875-4953. Please note that the PHC/VCH LTC Family Support Line cannot provide specific resident status reports. For information regarding a resident in the home, please contact Brock Fahrni directly.

For virtual visits, families can continue to call the UC at the nursing station to book (BF3 604-806-9713/BF4 604-806-9716). If family need additional support, Social Work is available at 604-806-9711.

We understand that this news may be frustrating in light of the ongoing vaccination campaign. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to provide the safest possible environment for our residents and staff.

Providence will provide regular updates, and should there be any new developments or changes to the above you will be notified.

Regards,

Ashley
