PPE Education Roles + Responsibilities

Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is key to employees and patients safety during the pandemic. This page includes a detailed and standardized description of the multiple roles supporting PPE education. The following information is for all staff and managers.

PPE COACH
  • Cost Centre: Pandemic
  • Reports to: Professional Practice Consultants (PCs)
  • Work direction from: IPAC ICPs; LTC Site Leaders; Professional Practice
  • Where education is provided: PHC Long Term Care (LTC) sites:
    • SVL
    • MSJ

    • Parkview
  • What education is provided:
    • Real time PPE & infection control practice coaching and support.
    • Provides PPE donning & doffing training to assist site education leaders
    • Acts as a PPE role model
    • Facilitate completion of COVID PPE Checklist & Agreements  to assist site education leaders
    • Assist site leaders to complete compliance audits of infection control standards
    • Escalate practice concerns and barriers to practice to site leaders for follow up.

PPE SPOTTER
  • Cost Centre: IPAC
  • Reports to: Sue FullerBlamey, Director of Infection Prevention & Control
  • Work direction from: IPAC ICPs
  • Where education is provided: PHC:
    • Acute Care
    • Ambulatory Care
    • Support Service Workers
  • What education is provided:
    • Real time PPE & infection control practice coaching and support.
    • Provides PPE donning & doffing training to assist program education leaders
    • Facilitate completion of COVID PPE Checklist & Agreements to assist program education leaders
    • Assist education leaders with the completion of compliance audits.
    • Escalate practice concerns and barriers to practice to program leaders for follow up.
    • Follows up on COVID testing results and performs additional duties as directed by ICPs.

PPE LEAD

  • Work direction from: From PPE Train the Trainer Education Session lead by Professional Practice & IPAC
  • Where education is provided: Acute in-patient and ambulatory programs
  • What education is provided:
    • Provides PPE donning & doffing education sessions
    • Provides in the moment PPE coaching to improve practice.
    • Acts as a PPE role model
  • Role Description: PPE Lead (PDF)
GENERAL NURSE EDUCATOR
  • Cost Centre: Program/ Site
  • Reports to: PCM
  • Work direction from: PCM - clinical area ; Professional Practice – PHC
  • Where education is provided: Acute, LTC, Ambulatory (some programs have assigned the education responsibility to another professional role)
  • What education is provided:
    • Leads clinical team to be COVID-19 practice prepared to prevent and work during an outbreak situation:
    • Provides visible, accessible clinical support to the nursing staff.
    • Acts as an information/education resource for clinical team.
    • Assesses, evaluates and validates the clinical team individual and group learning needs
    • Provides in the moment PPE and infection control practice coaching
    • Provides/facilitates provision of  structured PPE donning and doffing education and staff sign in sheets.
    • Facilitates completion of COVID PPE

PANDEMIC NURSE EDUCATOR
  • Cost Centre: Pandemic
  • Reports to: Julie Carleton, Professional Practice
  • Work direction from: Professional Practice Consultants
  • Where education is provided: PHC – all sites
  • What education is provided:
    • Creates standardized, evidence based education materials in collaboration with IPAC ICPs.
    • Provides education tools and materials to support educators
    • Provide PPE donning and doffing train-the-trainers sessions.
    • Provide PPE donning & doffing education to Allied Health and Contract Support Services.
    • Provides LTC PPE Coaches with practice support
    • Acts as a PPE role model and provides real time coaching as needed.

INFECTION CONTROL PRACTITIONER (ICP)
  • Cost Centre: IPAC
  • Reports to: Sue Fuller Blamey, Director of Infection Prevention & Control
  • Work direction from: Sue Fuller Blamey, Director of Infection Prevention & Control, Dr. Victor Leung, Medical Director, IPAC
  • Where education is provided: PHC – all sites
  • What education is provided:
    • Non PPE education
    • Provides IPAC / COVID-19 clinical subject matter expertise.
    • Provides clinical consultation and recommendations to guide practice and reduce risk of transmission.
    • Assists with implementation of control measures, evaluation of practices, communication and reporting of events and.
    • Communicates with external partners regarding communicable diseases.

CLINICAL NURSE LEADER

  • Where education is provided: Program/Site
  • What education is provided:
    • Acts as a COVID & PPE Staff Resource
    • Acts as a PPE role model
    • Provides PPE and practice feedback/coaching as needed.
    • Supports, promotes and facilitates attendance to education
