The PHC Ethics Services Team is available to support teams to work through moral distress, and can provide information about the COVID-19 Ethical Decision-Making Framework of pandemic response to increase understanding of this shift in ethical thinking. Staff can also receive help by calling the PHC COVID-19 Support Line at 604.806.9925 or ext 69925.

During public health crises, like the COVID-19 pandemic, the values and principles applied to health-care decision making shift as we move from our usual clinical ethics decision-making process to a public-health ethics focus and framework. Fundamentally, this represents a change in focus from the individual patient or resident to the needs of the community as a whole. When this occurs, we will notice changes in policies, operations, and practice – both within and outside of PHC.

This presentation, created by the PHC Ethics Services team, describes this shift and how ethical principles are applied to decision-making in this exceptional pandemic context.
