Provincial supply of vaccine expected to increase starting this week
We have been experiencing short-term delays in vaccine supply delivery for the past few weeks as manufacturing facilities scaled up their operations in order to deliver larger amounts. While supply still remains somewhat limited, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said Tuesday that increasing amounts are beginning to arrive. She said vaccine delivery is a complicated process with many moving parts, and we are adapting as best we can. As supply levels become more stable, we will continue to vaccinate more priority groups as laid out in the provincial COVID-19 Immunization Plan.
Moving to Phase 2
As we begin to move into Phase 2 of the province’s immunization plan, we have heard requests for clarification about which staff are included within this priority group. The category of hospital staff includes all staff who provide direct care to patients, including physicians, nurses and allied-health staff. A working group of health-authority leaders is determining who is eligible, and they are taking into account all types of roles and work. The exact timeline depends on how much vaccine is delivered in March, but we assure you that all health-care workers who want to be vaccinated will be in the coming weeks and months, and we appreciate your patience and understanding.
Phase 2 also includes seniors in the community who are 80 years of age and older, as well as Indigenous seniors and elders 65 years and older. We are planning our strategies to reach these populations in a variety of ways. This includes outreach to homebound individuals, taking vaccine to congregate living settings like we have done with long-term care homes, and other ways to engage community-based seniors. All of the people in our region who are eligible in Phase 2 will be contacted and invited for vaccination when we are ready to immunize them.
