WELCOMING HEALTH CARE SUPPORT WORKERS TO PROVIDENCE
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted and increased the need for Health Care Assistants (HCAs) across the province, particularly in long-term care (LTC) homes and assisted living sites. In responding to this need, the Government of British Columbia partnered with regional health authorities and Providence Health Care to launch the Health Career Access Program (HCAP) – an expedited education and training program for entry-level employment in the health sector.
Through this program, eligible individuals are hired as Health Care Support Workers (HCSWs), a newly created non-clinical and non-direct care role, and receive employer-sponsored training leading to a provincially recognized HCA credential.
HCSWs will be an integral member of the health care delivery team and will reduce overall workload by performing these typical duties:
- Establishing a caring relationship with residents and their families.
- Providing support and assistance with mealtime and other activities.
- Performing light housekeeping tasks.
- Greeting and directing visitors.
- Checking and restocking supplies.
The program takes about 12-18 months to complete and includes alternating between on-site rotations at LTC homes or assisted living sites and in-class learning at a designated post-secondary institution such as Vancouver Community College or Langara College. HCSWs will receive provincially standardized training and will work under the supervision of registered nurses or other regulated health care professionals at all times. HCSWs are paid during the program.
New cohorts will be added throughout the year as a part of the regular, ongoing program to support our LTC teams in continuing to provide exceptional care to our residents and tenants.
If you’re interested in the HCAP, PHC employees can view the HCSW job postings now available on the Internal Job Postings website. The job posting closes on Tuesday, February 9, 2021. We encourage staff to also refer potential participants who wish to join our LTC teams.
Here at Providence, we recently welcomed the Early Adopter cohort including seven HCSWs to join our teams at Youville Residence, Mount Saint Joseph Residence and Holy Family Hospital. Please join us in welcoming these new team members to the Providence family!
If you need to reach PHC’s Infection Prevention and Control Team (IPAC), please call local 69357. Do not contact individual IPAC team members.
